In Very Good condition with a Very Good dust jacket. Blue cloth boards, artist's name blind-stamped on front cover and in silver on spine. Mild shelf and edge wear. Binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. Illustrated dust jacket reproducing a detail of Holtrop's Compositie in blauw (1976) on front panel, early portrait of the artist and text in Dutch on glossy black rear panel; mild shelf and edge wear with some creasing along edges, and light surface scuffing to rear panel. Now in an archival quality (removable) Brodart cover. Monograph on Riemko Holtrop (1914-1996) of Hengelo, a pioneer of postwar Dutch modernism who was working experimentally before Cobra was formed. He co-founded the Twente artists' group De Nieuwe Groep in 1945, was the first teacher of the later Cobra painter Theo Wolvecamp, and exhibited with Vrij Beelden and Creatie in Amsterdam. Art historian Elmyra van Dooren places his work in its Dutch and international context, Wil de Graaf gives his life story, and a 1959 article by Holtrop is reprinted. Reproductions run from 1932 to 1995, including the 1946 Bezetting charcoal drawings, the benzinevellen (thinned oil on paper), monotypes, scrapeboards, and stained glass and brick-mosaic commissions in Enschede and Hengelo.
