In Good condition. Illustrated paper covers, Sambo with green umbrella meeting a tiger to front, verse and line drawing to rear. Splits along spine fold, about 1 in. at foot and 0.5 in. at head. 0.5 in. tear at top edge of rear cover. On rear cover, surface paper peeling at head of spine, a small chip at foot of spine, and a horizontal crease. Mild to moderate toning and soiling, with foxing to rear cover. Staple bound, staples rusted, binding tight. Pages toned with occasional light spotting and soiling. Otherwise unmarked. Helen Bannerman's story, first published in London by Grant Richards in 1899, in the Platt & Munk booklet printing issued as No. 3100-B of the publisher's 3100 series of small picture books, which also included Chicken Little (3100-A). The book's success led to many inexpensive unauthorized American editions, and neither author nor illustrator is named anywhere in this one. Eulalie (Eulalie Minfred Banks), a prolific Platt & Munk illustrator also known for The Three Little Pigs and The Gingerbread Boy, alternates full-color and black-and-white pictures; the story begins on inside front cover and ends on inside rear cover with the pancake supper. Langston Hughes criticized the book's caricatures in print in 1932. WorldCat (OCLC 16971190) records "Made in U.S.A." on the cover; that imprint does not appear on this copy.
