In Good condition. Glossy cream paper covers lettered in maroon on front and spine. Mild shelf and edge wear with light bumping and creasing to edges and corners, and mild spotting to rear cover. Glued binding cracked between pages 34 and 35, with all leaves intact and firmly held. Pages clean and unmarked. First volume of a two-volume life of the Oregon suffragist, newspaper publisher and novelist Abigail Scott Duniway, carrying the story from the Scott family's 1852 overland crossing to the founding of her newspaper The New Northwest and her 1871 lecture tour with Susan B. Anthony. Eight chapters: From Illinois to Oregon, The Best Catch in the County, Lessons in Liberty, Reconnaissance, Reconstruction, Houses Divided, The New Northwest, and Stumping with Anthony. Helen Krebs Smith worked on the project for twenty-eight years, beginning after David C. Duniway of Salem wrote a biographical sketch of his grandmother in 1947, and drew on unpublished family letters, diaries and records preserved by Clyde Duniway alongside the Oregon Historical Society's newspaper microfilm and county court house documents. Passages from Duniway's overland diary are printed at length. Sixty pages of critical references, a bibliography of original materials, and a twenty-five page index. Rear cover carries appraisals by Alfred Powers and Howard M. Corning. Volume Two, covering 1872 to 1876, followed in 1983.
