In Good condition. Red pictorial wraps, staple bound. Mild shelf wear; short crease and small chip at upper left corner of front cover, a few small white spots at lower left; rear cover with creasing and several small nicks along fore-edge and light soiling at corners. Binding tight. Pages lightly toned. Otherwise unmarked. Catalog of the exhibition shown at the Renwick Gallery in 1977-78, drawn from the collections of the Musee national des Arts et Traditions Populaires, Paris (the museum closed in 2005 and its collections went to MuCEM in Marseille). Prepared by Jean Cuisenier, the museum's director, with Yvonne Broutin, Maryse Marie, Michele Margerie and Philippe Pigelet; adapted from the French by Thomas W. Lyman; designed by Gerard Valerio. Introductory essays arrange French rural folk art by the stages of life, domestic roles, custom and ritual, and the peddlers and fairs that spread it, followed by entries for 189 objects: butter and gingerbread molds, sabots, Breton and Savoyard costume, faience, santons, Epinal prints, Guignol marionettes and the Polichinelle puppet on the cover.
