Combat Standards Manual in bright yellow paper covers, front cover with a black panel printed in yellow with blackletter titling and crossed swords, mild shelf wear, two staple holes at fore-edge showing on both covers. West Kingdom Art and Science III in green paper covers, front cover with a line-drawn heraldic border of Society award badges enclosing an illuminator at his desk, mild shelf and edge wear; rear cover printed as a self-mailer with the SCA-Inc. Milpitas return address, non-profit permit and an intact addressed mailing label. Bindings tight, staples sound. Pages clean. Otherwise unmarked. Two publications of the Kingdom of the West, the first kingdom of the Society for Creative Anachronism and the one founded by the May 1966 Berkeley tournament from which it grew. Both were mailed to members. Combat Standards Manual is the kingdom's rulebook for armored combat, issued as an insert to the administrative issue of the kingdom newsletter, The Page, in the Society's twenty-fifth year. Armor and weapon construction standards are taken, as the text states, from the Marshall's Handbook of the SCA and modified for use in the West, and the war rules close by defining how rivers, bridges, marshes and hay-bale castles work on the field. West Kingdom Art and Science III gathers research and practical articles: To the West, a song by Siobhan ni hEodhusa with music, chords and lyrics, written at the command of Prince Brandon d'Arundel while she was Bard of the Mists and finished at Twelfth Night A.S. XXVI; Puppets in Period by Bjorn Lundgren of Bearhaven and Hilarie the Puppeteer, covering glove puppets, the booths drawn in the Romance of Alexander, the descent of Mr. Punch from Pulcinella by way of Pepys, and the Sicilian rod figures used for Orlando Furioso; Medieval Welsh Cookery by Keridwen ferch Morgan Glasfryn, reviewing Enid Roberts' Food of the Bards with a bibliography and fifty notes keyed to Giraldus, the Law of Hywel Dda and the Mabinogion; In Somno Meo, a hand-drawn SATB setting by Vashti Damascene; guidance on documenting an entry for arts and sciences competition; a basse dance article by Geoffrey Mathias reprinted from The Letter of Dance; and Basic Beadwork and Book Curses reprinted from The Cockentrice, the arts and sciences newsletter of Lochac, the Society's Australian kingdom.
