In Good condition, no dust jacket. Maroon cloth with gilt lettering on front cover and spine, spine faded to tan with three vertical creases to the cloth, nicking and fraying to cloth at spine ends and corner tips, moderate shelf and edge wear, rubbing, mild soiling and a small dark stain to front cover. Binding tight despite the creased spine cloth. Faint pencil notations to upper corners of front pastedown and free endpaper. Pages mildly toned, otherwise unmarked. Lacks Plan VII, the large folding plan of the Acropolis at the rear, which has been neatly removed; all other plates and plans present. Macmillan's advertisements for archaeology titles at rear. A history of the Acropolis and its monuments from the Pelasgic fortress through the Persian destruction, the Periclean rebuilding, and the Hellenistic, Roman, and modern periods, written for both general readers and students after the Greek Archaeological Society's clearance of the summit was completed in 1889. D'Ooge (1839-1915), professor of Greek at the University of Michigan for more than forty years and Director of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens in 1886-87, treats the Parthenon, Propylaea, Temple of Athena Nike, and Erechtheum in detail, follows Pausanias's tour of the summit, and adds appendices on the ancient sources, the Pelargicon, and the Old Temple of Athena. Photogravure plates include the Parthenon from the east and west, the interior of the cella, the Varvakeion Athena, and the Theatre of Dionysus; ground plans of the Erechtheum and Propylaea and a folding plan of the Dionysiac Theatre are among the plans. Reviewed in the American Historical Review and the Journal of Hellenic Studies, and still the standard English account of its generation. Notes, select bibliography, and index.
