In Very Good condition with a Very Good dust jacket. Cream textured paper-covered boards lettered in gilt on spine. Light bumping to edges and corners, tiny nick to paper at lower corner of front cover, mild shelf and edge wear. Binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. Pictorial dust jacket (dancer Luisa Triana on front, guitarist Rene Heredia on rear, photographs by Candace Bevier) has a few small nicks and light creasing along edges, mild shelf and edge wear. Now in an archival quality (removable) Brodart cover. First English edition of the 1985 Fischer volume assembled by Claus Schreiner, the Frankfurt music journalist and world-music producer, with essays by six German flamenco specialists including Christof Jung, the Mainz bookseller and cante scholar, and Ehrenhard Skiera, musicologist and flamenco-guitar pedagogue. Written against the commercial "flamenco show," the book confines itself to Gypsy-Andalusian flamenco proper: its history from the first 18th-century references through the cafes cantantes, the Golden Age, and the 20th-century revival; the spiritual world of the cante; the great cantaores, bailaores, and guitarists; guitar construction and technique, with notated examples and a table of the compas groupings; castanets, palmas, and taconeo; and a photo-essay from Andalusia.
