Dame Kathleen Kenyon (1906-1978), excavator of Jericho (1952-58) and Jerusalem, Director of the British School of Archaeology in Jerusalem and Principal of St. Hugh's College, Oxford, had this edition nearly ready for press at her death; it was completely redesigned and reset, the text extensively rewritten, and new photographs and figures added to take in twenty years of discoveries since the 1960 first edition, including the Pre-Pottery Neolithic B sites at Tell Ramad and Beisamun, Teleilat Ghassul, Bab edh-Dhra, and the latest Carbon-14 determinations from Jericho.
