In Good condition. Green illustrated card covers (four children at a monkey cage on front) with light bumping and creasing to edges and corners, creasing along spine edge of front cover, a small chip at left edge of front cover, and a short closed tear at left edge of rear cover; mild shelf wear. Staple bound; covers have begun to pull away from the staples and are separated from the bottom staple, text block itself still held. Horizontal crease across p. 3; pages toned; entirely unused, with no coloring on any page and the name line on the front cover blank. Pre-primer picture book for the last months of kindergarten, built on the reading-readiness theory of the 1940s and 1950s: before a child meets print, build experience, observation, and speaking vocabulary through pictures and guided talk. Each spread follows the twins Jimmie and Janet and their cousins Tom and Susan on a visit to the city (the fire station, the dentist, the farm, the playground, the store), with a caption to be read aloud and a question to answer, and alternates a full-color painting with a heavy-outline drawing the child may color. Armstrong directed the reading clinic at Whittier College; Pease wrote the Rand McNally Elf books The Children That Lived in a Shoe and This Is the World. Inside front cover carries notes to teachers and parents; inside rear cover describes the three-book Follett Companion Readiness set (Come and See, Come and Hear, Come and Count) and the flocked Primary Easel and Kit used with it.
