In Very Good condition. Olive green cloth boards, gilt post chaise vignette on front cover, gilt lettering on spine. Mild shelf and edge wear, a hint of color loss at corner tips and at head and foot of spine. Binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. Issued in a plain clear acetate wrapper rather than a printed dust jacket; wrapper not present. In 1782 Rowlandson travelled from his London studio to Spithead to see the wreck of the Royal George, sketching inns, salterns, coast and shipping along the way. The drawings passed into the Huntington collection and sat largely unpublished for some forty years; before this volume the series was known chiefly from thirty-seven facsimiles Joseph Grego printed in The Graphic Summer Number for 1891. Wark's edition is the first complete publication of the drawings, with notes on each and an appendix reprinting Grego's account. He retraced the route in September 1961 with John Hayes of the London Museum. Designed by Ward Ritchie and printed by Anderson, Ritchie & Simon.
