In Good condition. Cream pictorial paper covers; front cover carries a photograph of Casa Grande and the Neptune fountain printed in turquoise, rear cover a facsimile of the typed La Cuesta Encantada menu for 28 November 1945. Mild shelf and edge wear with toning to edges and along the binding fold. Staples have released the centre section: pp. 47 to 50 are detached and laid in. All pages present, clean and unmarked. Souvenir cookbook of the Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument, published fourteen years after the Castle opened to the public. The source is stated in the text: guest lists, menus and records were preserved by Ann Rotanzi, housekeeper to the Hearst Corporation and the Hearst family for twelve years, who often acted as hostess to visitors sent up to lunch. Menus reproduced here are described as authentic copies of those used; the rear cover carries one in facsimile, a luncheon and dinner for 28 November 1945 giving the evening's film, "Blithe Spirit," and the house hours: breakfast nine to twelve, luncheon at two, dinner at nine. William Randolph Hearst Jr. contributes a foreword recalling the food from 1919 onward, his father's pressed duck squeezed in a silver wine press, and game and produce raised on the ranch; a second piece dated August 1970 describes the illuminated scroll the San Francisco printer John Henry Nash prepared and sent to his father at Christmas 1932. Photographs include the Neptune Pool, the Theatre, Mr. Hearst's Gothic Study, the pantry's brass swan faucets, Phoebe Apperson Hearst with her five grandsons, and an emu on the ranch. Recipes run to Boula, Terrapin Maryland, Hollywood Soup, Castle Candied Sweet 'Taters, Ranch House Beans and a Castle Cocktail.
