In Very Good condition with a Very Good dust jacket. Red cloth over boards, black lettering on spine. Mild edge and shelf wear. Binding tight. Pages mildly toned. Otherwise unmarked. Pictorial dust jacket shows the Alamo facade against a turquoise sky, title in orange and cream; spine bright with lettering intact, a few small nicks and short tears with light creasing along edges, mild toning to flap folds. Unclipped and unpriced as issued. Now in an archival quality (removable) Brodart cover. Second volume of Hart's Forts of the Old West series. A Marine Corps major and Medill-trained journalist, Hart photographed the sites himself on a 15,000-mile trip in 1963, visiting every fort in the book but three; the text pairs what happened at each post with what survives on the ground, and each entry closes with driving directions and cautions about rattlesnakes, locked gates and roads no family car should attempt. Fort Tejon and the posts at Benicia carry the California chapters, including Edward Fitzgerald Beale's camel experiment. Kit Carson's 1866 oath of office is reproduced from the National Archives. First printing of the Bonanza Books edition (letter line a-h), published by arrangement with Superior Publishing Co., publisher of the 1964 first edition. Bibliography was withheld from this volume and consolidated into Volume III.
