Esteban Vicente (1903-2001) painted into his late nineties at Bridgehampton, and lived to attend the 1998 opening of the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Esteban Vicente, founded in his honor in his Spanish hometown of Segovia. Paintings of 1998 to 2000, made when Vicente was in his mid-nineties and working from the flower garden outside his studio. Barbara Toll's essay reads individual canvases back against the beds themselves, matching Form in Space to poppies and daisies in late afternoon sun, Pylon to the flowers leading up to the garden gate, Harmony to shadow in green shrubbery. Toll notes the house had been sold and the garden was gone by the time she wrote. With a chronology running 1903 to 1997.
