Condition & notes

In Good condition, no dust jacket. Blue cloth boards with gilt lettering on front cover and spine and a gilt Southwest Museum roundel on front cover. Mild shelf and edge wear with light nicking at head and foot of spine and to corners, and some color loss along edges and corner tips. Mild rubbing to covers; gilt lettering on front cover and spine moderately rubbed and faint. Binding tight. Several previous owners' marks: a printed return address on front pastedown, at foot of page 6 and on rear endpaper, a further address in ink with two lines scored through, and a printed mailing label on front pastedown. Toning to endpapers with scattered spotting and brown offsetting along the gutter. Toning to edges of text block with some waviness at the fore edge from moisture exposure. Pages mildly toned, otherwise unmarked. Compiled from articles that ran in the Southwest Museum's Masterkey between November 1955 and February 1958. Johnston worked from John Peabody Harrington's field notes and Gabrielino informants, from Hugo Reid's 1852 letters to the Los Angeles Star, and from Kroeber's California studies; Harrington supplied the preface, among the last of his writings, and the book is dedicated to him. Covers the coastal plain of Los Angeles County, the northwest corner of Orange County and the offshore islands, from the Portola expedition through the mission, post-mission and American periods. The map locates Gabrielino place names against known archaeological sites. Cloth issue, recorded by WorldCat as 1962 [i.e. 1964]; the title-page date carries over from the 1962 wrappers issue. Contents: Foreword, by Carl S. Dentzel; Preface, by John P. Harrington; Map of Gabrielino Area at Time of Portola Expedition; Introduction; The Northwestern Borderland; The Eastern Borderland: A Study of the Cultural Elements; The Southern Borderland: A Study of the Religion; The Seacoast and the Rivers; The Islands: Spanish Exploration by Sea; The Great Valleys: Spanish Exploration by Land, The Mission Period, The Post-Mission Period, The American Period; Epilogue; Suggested Additional Reading; Index.
