Condition & notes

In good condition. Turquoise pictorial covers show moderate shelf wear with a few small nicks and tears and light creasing along the edges. Loss to the ink at the upper right corner of the front cover, about half an inch. A faint stain runs the height of the front cover, right of center. Scattered soiling and small dark spots to both covers, with toning along the edges. Binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. Cover reproduces The Ropers by George Marks (1923-1983), who died the year this issue appeared; Kay Mayer's profile of him runs inside. The Harry Jackson feature traces his route from the Chicago stockyards through the Marines to the New York circle of Grace Hartigan and Jackson Pollock, then to Wyoming and a studio and foundry at Camaiore in Italy, and covers his 1957 commission from the Whitney Gallery of Western Art for Range Burial and Stampede. Mark Miller's piece on recreated Northern Plains material culture is illustrated with a Central Plains pipebag of about 1840 and a Blackfeet doll of about 1870. A bound-in color gatefold offers two Oleg Stavrowsky prints from Plum Graphics of Austin. Back cover carries a John Lane Gallery advertisement for Don Stivers's Scouts Report.
