In good condition. Grey paper covers show mild shelf wear, toning overall and browning along edges, with nicking and small tears to edges and spine and a small dark smudge at center of front cover. Truesdail Laboratories rubber stamp at upper right of front cover, light pencil marks alongside. Staple bound; binding tight. Chipping and short tears along fore-edge of early leaves, with a piece missing from lower outer corner of second leaf. Pages toned, otherwise unmarked. Day was a research assistant at Woods Hole. This is the analytical companion to the raw returns he and Dean Bumpus published the year before as Special Scientific Report: Fisheries No. 242. He charts seasonal surface circulation from 17 cruises of the Albatross II, Albatross III and Atlantis between 1931 and 1956, and reads daily wind vectors off weather maps for 60 days after each cruise to gauge wind influence. He finds the Georges Bank eddy pronounced in the 1930s and markedly absent in 1953 and 1956, and concludes that plankton on the Bank had a better chance of staying there in the earlier decade, citing Walford on haddock eggs and larvae. Bottles that sank and were later dredged up by fishermen, four to thirty-seven months on, gave an unexpected record of bottom drift. The paper is cited in a 2023 study in Frontiers in Marine Science comparing drift-bottle recoveries with modeled North Atlantic circulation.
