In good condition. Pale green covers printed with a line map of the New York Bight show mild shelf wear and toning along all edges, with scattered small stains and a prominent brown stain at upper left of front cover. Small nicks and light creasing to edges and corners, and a short crease at lower right of rear cover. Ink acquisition note dated January 1952 at lower right of front cover, small blue ink mark on rear cover. Staple and glue bound; binding tight. Pages toned, foxing at foot of first two leaves, otherwise unmarked. Publication 201 was the first title in the renumbered Academy-Council series, replacing the discontinued Bulletin and Reprint and Circular series. It reports an investigation the National Lead Company itself requested and funded, after commercial and sport fishing interests opposed its plan to barge acid-iron waste from the Sayreville titanium plant out past Scotland Lightship. Woods Hole and the Fish and Wildlife Service ran the studies: iron accumulation in sea water and bottom sediment, effects on plankton and bottom fauna, water transparency, and circulation in the bight traced by drift bottles. Alfred Redfield, of the Redfield ratio, was the Woods Hole author and its associate director at the time. An early document in the long argument over ocean dumping.
