Condition & notes
In good condition. Glossy illustrated paper covers in cream show mild shelf wear, with light bumping to edges and corners and some soiling. Binding tight. Spotting to edges of text block and to a few preliminary leaves. Otherwise unmarked. Jose Maria Morelos y Pavon, the parish priest of Caracuaro who took command of the Mexican insurgency after Hidalgo and was executed in 1815, has a documented ancestry that earlier writers had rarely carried past his grandparents. Chavez Sanchez, a genealogist working in the parish and notarial archives of Morelia, Apaseo and Queretaro, assembled roughly a hundred and fifty documents and traced the line into the late sixteenth century, a generation earlier than the accepted account. He takes up the long-disputed question of Morelos's ancestry, pushing back against Lucas Alaman's nineteenth-century treatment of it, and reprints in facsimile the death certificate and the inventory of possessions taken from Morelos at his execution. A plate reproduces seventeen signatures of Morelos and his family. This second edition corrects errors that entered a hurried first printing.
