In Very Good condition with a Good dust jacket. Green cloth-covered boards, black lettering on spine, black scroll-band decoration stamped across top and bottom of front board. Mild shelf and edge wear, cloth bright with no fading to spine, corners sharp. Publisher's library binding (ISBN 0-690-75241-5), issued for the institutional market; this copy was never in library service and carries no stamps, pockets, labels or markings of any kind. Binding tight. Endpapers and text clean and unmarked. Illustrated dust jacket, pale green with Dillon woodcut of Baganda musicians before a thatched enclosure, has a 4-inch tear running down from top edge of front panel through the orange sun disc, several nicks and short tears of half an inch or less to edges, toning along top edge, a few scattered spots of soiling, mild shelf and edge wear. Price-clipped. Now in an archival quality (removable) Brodart cover. Thirteen traditional songs of the Baganda of southern Uganda, each with the story that accompanies it, collected by William Moses Serwadda from his own family and community in the Bukunja area near Lake Victoria. Texts are given in Luganda with phonetic spelling and an English translation, set to conventional musical notation so the songs can be sung in the original rather than in translation. Serwadda taught in the Department of Music, Dance and Drama at Makerere University, Kampala, and sang with the Nyonza Singers; Hewitt Pantaleoni, who transcribed and edited, was an ethnomusicologist trained at Harvard with a doctorate in world music from Wesleyan. Woodcut illustrations in black and red by Leo and Diane Dillon, printed two years before the first of their back-to-back Caldecott Medals.
