Condition & notes

In Very Good condition. Glossy pictorial wrappers reproducing Nathalie Picoulet's pastel Le grand turban bleu. Light wear to edges and corners, faint crease along front joint. Binding tight. Interior clean and unmarked. A showcase album from the Societe des Pastellistes de France, founded 1885 and counting Degas, Puvis de Chavannes, Helleu, Tissot and Mary Cassatt among its members: four to five plates each for ten of its Maitres Pastellistes, drawn from the society's salons and its Festival International du Pastel. Texts by founder-president Jean-Pierre Merat, French with facing English translation. Ken Paine (1926-2020) was made Maitre Pastelliste in 1987 and Vice-President in 1990, an honour rarely given to an Englishman; Gwenneth Barth-White is a Master Pastelist of the Pastel Society of America. Undated, but Picoulet received her title in 2005 and Merat died in 2010; five of the ten gave the master demonstrations at the first European Pastel Congress, Paris, November 2007.
