In Very Good condition. Glossy purple pictorial wrappers, front cover printed with a repeating field of Japanese family crests in magenta framing a color photograph, white back cover with publisher's advertisements for the JPT bonsai books series. Light bumping to edges and corners, mild surface and edge wear, faint soiling to back cover, mild creasing to spine but binding still tight. Top outer corner of front flap clipped; flap priced $5.95 at foot. Mild staining and toning to edges of text block and endpapers, pages otherwise clean and unmarked. Translated from the Japanese Mamebonsai (Ikeda Publishing, Tokyo, 1972), and one of very few English-language books given wholly to mame-bonsai, the smallest class of bonsai, small enough that an adult can hold two or three at once in the palm of the hand. Katayama, born 1908 in Yamanashi Prefecture, trained at the Tokyo Institute of Landscape Gardening, worked for the municipal parks department, and founded the Japan Bonsai Association in 1965. He covers containers, soils, fertilizing, watering, pests, repotting and locations, then the propagation methods (sectioning, grafting, cuttings, root division, seedlings), then the classical forms (cascade, semicascade, raft, group planting, stone and crag), closing with five representative plants.
