In Very Good condition, no dust jackets. Glossy black pictorial paper over boards, each volume carrying a different black-and-white portrait of Efros, spines numbered 1 through 4. Mild shelf wear with light bumping to edges and corners. Lamination intact throughout. Bindings tight. Pages lightly toned but unmarked. Efros (1925-1987) directed at the Central Children's Theatre, the Lenin Komsomol, the Malaia Bronnaia and finally the Taganka, and was a leading interpreter of the classics in the Soviet theatre of the 1960s through the 1980s. These four books collect his writing on the work itself: rehearsal as daily practice, the director's trade, and his readings of the plays he staged. Volumes 1 through 3 are revised and expanded second editions; the fourth appeared posthumously, compiled by his widow, the critic Natalia Krymova, and takes up Diderot's paradox of the actor, teaching, and Moliere's Misanthrope. Designed by their son Dmitrii Krymov, now among Russia's leading directors.
