In Very Good condition with a Very Good dust jacket. Black cloth boards, gilt lettering on front cover. Mild bumping and shelf wear to corners and edges. Binding tight. Red silk page marker frayed at the end. Pages clean and unmarked. Pictorial dust jacket, dark green with a painting of a woman carrying a winnowing basket on her head, has a few small nicks and light creasing along edges with mild shelf wear overall. Now in an archival quality (removable) Brodart cover. Monograph on the Hanoi painter Mai Anh, born 1961 in Thanh Hoa, issued by Ngan Pho Gallery with the Santa Barbara firm Kim3 International Furnishings and designed by the artist herself. Ian Findlay-Brown, editor of Asian Art News, contributes the essay "The Anxiety of Silence" on the position of women artists in Vietnam, and quotes her refusing the frame: "I don't really care about the question of being a female artist in Vietnam. It is the work that matters." Her subjects are solitary women, mothers with children, figures under conical hats in rain and flooded fields, and still lifes, worked in flat saturated grounds of red, ochre and green. The chronology traces a provincial start (Thanh Hoa Fine Arts and Culture College in 1981, then seventeen years at the Thanh Hoa Fine Arts Company) and a move to Hanoi at thirty-seven that opened outward fast: a Vietnam Fine Arts Association award in 1999, Philip Morris Group certificates in 1999 and 2000, and by 2002 exhibitions in Hong Kong, Sydney, Brussels and California. Her canvases have since reached the international salerooms, Solar Eclipse bringing 17,640 dollars at Christie's New York in 2023. Captions give Vietnamese and English titles with dimensions and dates.
