In Very Good condition with a Very Good dust jacket. Cream paper-covered boards with burgundy spine, gilt lettering on spine. Mild bumping and shelf wear to corners and edges. Binding tight. Burgundy endpapers. Pages clean and unmarked. Pictorial dust jacket, pale green with a sepia portrait of Hammett and an inset snapshot of Hammett with Jo as a young woman, has a short tear at the front edge, small nicks and light creasing along edges, and mild soiling. Jo Hammett's memoir of her father, published forty years after his death and edited by Hammett bibliographer Richard Layman with Jo's daughter Julie M. Rivett. Drawn from the family's own albums and profusely illustrated: snapshots of Hammett in San Francisco, Hollywood and off the Connecticut coast, Jo and her sister Mary as children, the Santa Monica houses, a facsimile of a 1938 letter from Hammett to Jo on Beverly Wilshire letterhead, and newspaper clippings of his 1951 jailing for contempt. Covers the Pinkerton and tuberculosis years, her parents' marriage, the Hollywood money and the gambling, the drinking, the long entanglement with Lillian Hellman (which Jo treats with open skepticism), the blacklist and the imprisonment during which Jo served as his sole designated correspondent.
