Volume 179 in the bound series issued by International Textbook Company, the publishing arm of the International Correspondence Schools of Scranton, Pennsylvania. ICS grew out of a mine-safety question-and-answer column run by Thomas J. Foster in the Colliery Engineer and Metal Miner and enrolled its first class of 500 miners in 1891; cumulative enrollment reached four million by 1930, making it the most successful correspondence school in American history. The bound volumes gathered the loose serial-numbered Instruction Papers into permanent form, this one comprising Lathe Thread Cutting (Serial 2204, Edition 1), Turret Lathes, and Turret Lathe Practice (Serial 2213, Edition 1), and retaining the examination questions the student was to complete and mail back for grading. The third and final book of the Lathe Work course, covering the production end of the trade: screw thread forms and standards, threading tools and change-gear calculation, thread cutting and testing on the engine lathe, then turret screw machines, monitor lathes, flat and vertical turret lathes, automatic die heads, and the turret tooling and setups used for repetition work. WorldCat records the three-book course at OCLC 3694420, where the third volume carries the series number 179B; this copy is the earlier 179, dated 1928 on the title page.
