In Very Good condition, no dust jacket. Black pebble-grained cloth, blind-stamped title panel and International Textbook Company monogram on front cover, gilt lettering on spine. Mild shelf and surface wear, mild edge wear, and a hint of color loss at head and foot of spine. Binding tight. Green and cream marbled endpapers, blue-stained page edges. Pages very mildly worn, otherwise clean and unmarked. Volume 176 in the bound series issued by International Textbook Company, the publishing arm of the International Correspondence Schools of Scranton, Pennsylvania. ICS grew out of a mine-safety question-and-answer column run by Thomas J. Foster in the Colliery Engineer and Metal Miner and enrolled its first class of 500 miners in 1891; cumulative enrollment reached four million by 1930, making it the most successful correspondence school in American history. The bound volumes gathered the loose serial-numbered Instruction Papers into permanent form, this one comprising Drilling Machines (Serial 2219, Edition 1) and Drilling Practice. Covers portable and stationary drilling machines, air and electric drills, radial and multiple-spindle machines, drill shanks, sockets and chucks, twist drills, reamers, counterbores, taps and tapping, speeds and feeds, work holding, drilling jigs and fixtures. The folding plate at pp. 28-29 shows the driving system of a radial drilling machine in sectional detail, signed at foot BB 176 2219 for the publisher's Bluebook series. Both sections carry the 1927 copyright without later dates; collation matches the WorldCat record for the 1927 issue at OCLC 3694035.
