In Good condition, no dust jacket. Maroon pebble-grain boards, "EL RODEO" stamped in coral running vertically on the front board; bumping and rubbing to the corners and edges, some color loss along the spine and the front hinge, a small scuff at the center of the front board, and scattered scratches to the rear board. Binding tight. Red-and-cream striped endpapers. Pages lightly toned but otherwise unmarked.Louis Zamperini's freshman year at USC. He had run the 5,000 meters at the Berlin Olympics in August 1936 and entered USC that fall on a track scholarship, so this is the first yearbook of his college career, published while he was still just the fastest miler on campus and years away from the bomber crash, the raft, and the prison camps that Laura Hillenbrand's Unbroken made famous. The Frosh Track section (p. 292) reads: "Louis Zamperini, most famous of the Trojan frosh because of his Olympic Games experience, was the most consistent performer on Eddie Leahy's strong team. Zamperini was close to 4:20 in the mile all season . . . In the U.C.L.A. meet, he sped the four laps in the remarkable time of 4 minutes, 18.3 seconds, coasting into the finish many yards ahead of the field." He appears again in the Phi Kappa Tau composite (p. 332), pictured and listed as Louis Zamperini '37 beside his brother Pete.The Olympic content runs deeper than Zamperini. A two-spread section (pp. 254-257) covers the Eleventh Olympiad at Berlin: a team photograph of the ten Trojans who traveled with coach Dean Cromwell, with individual portraits and write-ups of Kenneth Carpenter (gold, discus), Earl Meadows (gold, pole vault), Frank Wykoff, Foy Draper, Bill Sefton, Bill Graber, Harold Smallwood, Delos Thurber, Roy Staley and Al Fitch. Cromwell is credited here with placing sixteen Trojans on the 1936 Olympic squad. Draper and Wykoff ran on the American 4x100 relay, the race from which Sam Stoller and Marty Glickman were pulled at the last minute.Two more names in the same volume. John Berardino, listed in Phi Kappa Tau alongside Zamperini, lettered in center field for USC in 1937, went on to eleven seasons in the majors and a 1948 World Series ring with Cleveland, then spent thirty-three years as Dr. Steve Hardy on General Hospital, the only man with both a World Series ring and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Lionel Van Deerlin, later an eighteen-year Congressman from San Diego, is pictured in the Activities section and listed in Sigma Alpha Epsilon.Also present: the 1936 Trojan varsity football squad, duotone campus photography of the Bovard tower and Doheny Library, and the year's In Memoriam page.
