In Good condition. Toning and mild soiling to covers, with a few small nicks and light creasing along the edges and corners. Previous prices in ink on the front cover. Back cover plain red with the cream Harold Flammer tuning-fork-and-bells device, lightly scuffed. Binding tight (staple bound). Music lightly toned but otherwise unmarked.Twelve American patriotic songs arranged for one piano, four hands, by Stanford King. Both parts print in one book across each opening: Secondo on the left page, Primo on the right, most pieces running to a single spread. The Primo carries the melody with the words printed beneath it, so the piece can be sung while it is played, and King prints his teaching directions into the score itself ("Bring out counter-melody," "Melody in large notes brought out"). Written for early grades, the duet format lets a beginner play with a teacher, a parent or a second child, which holds the tempo steady and makes the reading lesson social rather than solitary. King's own "National Defense March" closes the album, dating the collection to the home-front years.Stanford King (1912-2010) studied at the Manhattan School of Music in the 1930s and then at Juilliard.
