In Good condition. Green illustrated card covers, front cover reproducing a Kotah tiger-hunt painting in green and black, lettered in black; mild to moderate surface wear, with some color loss along the edges and spine, light bumping and creasing to the edges and corners, chipping and tearing to the paper at the head and foot of the spine, and scuffing and soiling to the rear cover. Price sticker on back cover. Binding tight. Mild spotting to the title page and mild rippling to the plate leaves along the lower edge. Pages mildly toned but otherwise unmarked. Two essays by W. G. Archer, Keeper of the Indian Section at the Victoria and Albert Museum, reconstructing the history of painting in Bundi and Kotah, the two Rajput states of eastern Rajasthan. Archer traces the Bundi manner from its seventeenth-century beginnings through the ragamala and barahmasa series to the hunting pictures of Kotah, and argues for the poetic content of these paintings and their affinities with modern European art, closing the Kotah essay with a plate of the Douanier Rousseau's The Dream. Includes a catalogue of the Bundi and Kotah pictures in the Museum's collection, with plates drawn from the V&A, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Prince of Wales Museum, Bombay, and the Kanoria and Mehta collections.
