Sousa, personalized to previous owners and dated 3-15-09. Pages otherwise unmarked. Eight essays on Amazonia by the author of Os Sertoes (Rebellion in the Backlands), drawn from da Cunha's 1905 expedition up the Purus River on the Brazil-Peru border and first published in Portuguese in 1909 as A margem da historia. Mixing scientific observation with poetic language, the essays describe the Amazonian rivers, the brutal life of the rubber collectors, and the Brazilian colonial enterprise in the Acre territory.
