In Very Good condition, no dust jacket. Light blue cloth boards, gilt-ruled border and gilt lettering on front cover and spine, MACMILLAN at foot of spine. Mild shelf wear with light staining, soiling, and toning to covers, and some fading to edges and spine. Binding tight. Pages lightly toned with occasional light spotting but otherwise unmarked. A biography of King Albert I of the Belgians (1875-1934), written by the Anglo-Belgian poet and scholar Emile Cammaerts in the year following the King's death. Drawing on official documents and the testimony of those who knew him, Cammaerts presents Albert as soldier and statesman: his leadership of the Belgian army through the invasion of 1914 and the long defense of the Yser, the reconstruction of Belgium after the war, and his character and private life. With an appendix printing the drafts of the Belgian reply to the German ultimatum and related documents.
