In Very Good condition with Very Good dust jackets. Black cloth boards with white-lettered spines show light bumping to corners and edges. Bindings tight. Pages clean and unmarked. A small previous owner's stamp appears on the lower edge of Volume III near the spine. Publisher's blue dust jackets show mild shelf wear with a few small nicks, edge tears, and light creasing along the edges; Volume III's jacket has lightly faded along the spine. Each jacket now in an archival quality (removable) Brodart cover.A standard biographical reference for American Western art, with the third and final volume bringing the total to approximately 4,100 entries on artists born before 1900 whose work portrayed or was inspired by the seventeen American states lying west of the 95th meridian. The Dictionary is particularly noted for what the jacket flap describes as Dawdy's having "unearthed data on hundreds of women artists, many of whose names were lost until now." Each entry lists dates and places of birth and death, primary area of residence, location of works, and references to additional sources; many entries also carry brief biographical sketches and capsule characterizations of the artist's work. Volume I (1974, here in the second printing of 1980) sets the foundation; Volume II (1981) adds 1,450 new listings; Volume III (1985) introduces additional artists and includes the bibliography and consolidated three-volume index.
