In Good condition. Medium blue paper wraps printed in black; front cover lettered "The Naval Reserve of the United States Navy / A Pamphlet for the Instruction and Guidance of Naval Reserve Officers" above the seal of the Navy Department of the United States of America; rear cover blank. A 1/2-inch tear at the top edge of the front cover near the spine, a few smaller nicks and tears, light creasing along cover edges, and light fading and soiling to both covers. Staple binding tight. Interior pages lightly toned along the edges but otherwise clean and unmarked. A 1942 U.S. Navy pamphlet issued by the Bureau of Naval Personnel and the Government Printing Office as a basic orientation for newly commissioned Naval Reserve officers in the early months of American involvement in the Second World War. The Foreword, signed by Rear Admiral Randall Jacobs, Chief of Naval Personnel, October 1, 1942, describes the pamphlet's purpose as acquainting newly appointed officers "with certain basic information in regard to the Navy and Naval Reserve as an aid to them in adapting themselves to the Naval Service and increasing their proficiency as Naval Reserve officers." Sections cover United States naval policy, orders and duty procedures, uniforms and identification, medical and hospital benefits, pensions, training of Naval Reserves in wartime (indoctrination schools and specialized training courses), conduct and etiquette (including wardroom etiquette), the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps, Aviation Cadets and A-V(n) officers, the Naval Reserve Nurse Corps, the Women's Reserve, pay and allowances, information concerning the Naval Reserve in peacetime, and an appendix of annual pay and allowances by rank. A practical and evocative piece of wartime Navy ephemera, priced originally at 15 cents.
