In good condition. Yellow illustrated paper covers have light bumping to edges and corners and light surface wear with mild color loss; light spotting to rear cover. Staple binding firm; interior pages lightly toned but otherwise unmarked. Reprint of William V. Wells' 1860 article first published in Harper's, describing tools and methods of California gold mining during and shortly after the Gold Rush. Covers early techniques including pan, rocker, long tom, quicksilver machine, river jamming, coyoteing, hydraulic mining, and quartz mining. Includes illustrations drawn from 19th-century sources such as History of California (1850) and Picturesque California (1888), along with reproductions of period mining scenes including works after Frederic Remington. Preface by William R. Jones provides historical context and discusses the environmental and economic impact of early mining in California.
