In good condition wraps in acceptable condition. Original pale blue illustrated paper wraps present and removable; wraps show moderate overall age toning and scattered foxing; edges and corners worn with small chips and losses with heavier chips to paper over the top edges of rear covers and heavier wear along the spine folds. Underlying stiff paper stock covers intact and toned. Spine intact. Interior text pages lightly toned with scattered foxing; text clean and unmarked. Plates unmarked with light age toning. Concise monographic introduction to the sculpture of Aristide Maillol (1861-1944), issued as part of the Das Meisterwerk series devoted to major figures in European art. Heinrich Appel's introductory essay discusses Maillol's emphasis on unity of form, clarity of mass, and classical balance, situating his sculpture apart from the expressive model commonly associated with Rodin. Published on the eve of World War II, the volume reflects Maillol's mature reputation at the close of the interwar period and includes works exhibited as late as 1937, presenting his sculpture just before wartime disruptions altered European artistic life. The photographic plates document key sculptural works in terracotta, stone, and bronze, with a plate list identifying individual figures and exhibition contexts.
