In very good condition. Glossy white oblong pictorial card covers show light shelf rubbing and minor handling wear; corners lightly bumped; binding tight. Interior pages clean and unmarked. Describes Roberts fieldwork in the region since 1997, outlines the cultural setting of Guizhou villages, and discusses the impact of modernization on traditional dress. Chapters survey village life, seasonal festivals, and the role of elaborate costume in marking identity and status; examine traditional fibers such as hemp, ramie, cotton, silk, silk felt, and wool; and explain textile techniques including batik, pleating, braiding, dyeing, weaving, and embroidery, often paired with full-page color images of jackets, skirts, aprons, baby carriers, and other garments. A concluding section interprets the symbolism, pattern, and design of motifs associated with fertility, prosperity, and long life, situating these textiles within a broader context of rapidly vanishing handcraft traditions in southwest China.
