In good condition / good minus dust jacket. Maroon cloth boards stamped in gilt on spine show light rubbing to extremities and minor shelf wear. Binding tight. Interior pages clean and unmarked aside from mild age toning near margins. Frontispiece portrait of Washington Irving at age thirty-seven. Dust jacket is toned overall with edge chips, short closed tears, creasing along the top edge, and a small stain on the lower front panel; spine panel stained and darkened with age; jacket price covered with black circular sticker (not clipped). Now in an archival quality removable Brodart cover. A complete reproduction of Washington Irving's manuscript Journal covering approximately thirteen months of travel in Germany, Holland, France, and England during 1823-1824. The entries document Irving's social and literary life in Paris and London, his contacts with figures such as Samuel Rogers and Thomas Moore, the work following the success of The Sketch Book and Bracebridge Hall, and his notes toward what became Tales of a Traveller. Of particular interest is the previously unknown manuscript on William the Conqueror, printed here for the first time.
