A photographic and descriptive portrait of Julian, a historic California gold-mining town in the mountains sixty miles northeast of San Diego. Craig, a sculptor and longtime resident, pairs his reflections on the town's history and contemporary life with local photographs by Candy S. Nelson-Fiddes, Clint Powell, and Tom Mehnken. Emphasizes Julian's 19th-century gold rush heritage, its relative isolation from modern freeway development, and its preservation as a "national treasure" in the 1980s. Includes images of historic mines, town buildings, rustic roads, sculptures by the author, and seasonal vignettes of Julian life. Craig (b. Newton, Massachusetts) studied art concepts at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts before a Navy career brought him to San Diego in 1940. After retiring in 1960, he became an exhibiting sculptor and board member of the San Diego Art Institute. His wood sculpture, often from native manzanita, is noted for its polished stone-like finish and inventive forms.
