Illustrator Arnold Edwin Bare (born June 20, 1920, New York) studied for two years at Yale University before beginning his career in publishing. His first children's book illustration, Pierre Pidgeon by Lee Kingman (1943), was a runner-up for the 1944 Caldecott Award. Bare went on to illustrate a number of titles during the 1940s and 1950s, and later authored and illustrated his own book, Maui's Summer.
