A publisher's note opposite page 1 explains that the first two editions used the 99th U.S. Infantry in examples and that readers may substitute the 399th or any other number to keep the material current; it also states that additional chapters have been added for "Travel by Rail" and "Cantonment Life", written from actual experience in the National Army. Service Record and Qualification Record plates also have been added. These are peculiar to the National Army. This suggests a printing date in mid-to-late 1918, during the period of U.S. Army wartime expansion.
