Catalog published to accompany the international traveling exhibition sponsored by Seton Hall University from 1985 to 1988. The volume showcases the work of renowned Chinese-American calligrapher and painter Wang Fangyu (1913 - 1997), whose expressive and abstract ink paintings bridge traditional Chinese calligraphy with modern visual art. Includes a scholarly preface outlining key tenets of Chinese calligraphic philosophy, detailed notes on over 40 exhibited works, and a rare presentation of the artist's personal seals carved by masters such as Qi Baishi and Zhao Zhiqian. Wang Fangyu (1913 - 1997) was a celebrated Chinese calligrapher, collector, and art historian. Born in Beijing, he later emigrated to the United States, where he taught Chinese language and literature at Yale and Seton Hall University. His dynamic style of pictorial calligraphy drew inspiration from ancient script forms and the work of the 17th-century painter Bada Shanren. He was also one of the foremost collectors and scholars of Bada Shanren in the West.
