In very good condition, Glossy pictorial paper covers have light bumping and creasing to edges and light overall scuffing. Binding tight (staple bound). Pages clean and unmarked. Color and black and white illustrations. [From page 1] "The third court of the season held at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday evening was one of exceptional brilliance." "There was a most interesting number of presentations of debutantes." "The week began with the King holding a Levee at Buckingham Palace, where the diplomatic corps attended in full force, and almost all the members of the cabinet were present." These enthusiastic descriptions of social gatherings were written in the magazine The Queen a year before the outbreak of the First World War. The picture painted is one of a world profoundly different from our own yet it was still in existence less than fifty years ago. When the Levees and then the presentations finally came to an end the colour and glitter had been a part of Society for over 200 years. This book explores the world of court, Drawing Room and Levee, court dress and uniform as a companion to the unique display of costume now on show at Kensington Palace.
