Erie Stanley Gardner's fifth book about Baja California centers chiefly upon its northern reaches, a section frequently overlooked by North Americans because of its very proximity to the United States. Most travelers to the area are of course familiar with Tijuana and Mexicali, but mainly as the objects of short forays across the border or as entry points to the beckoning peninsular beyond or to Mexico proper. What captured Mr. Gardner's interest was the terrain lying immediately south of the border and within one hundred and fifty miles of the international boundary - a land of mountains, lakes, and canyons - and he set forth to explore it by a variety of means, ranging from his fleet of specially built "sand buggies" to a Goodyear blimp. This lavishly illustrated account of Mr. Gardner's experiences provides an enthusiastic introduction to a little-known part of Baja California that he appropriately calls "Mexico's Magic Square."
