The appeal of Mr. Cosulich's photographs, however, is that they have nothing of a stereotyped, postcard-style, nature. Though it cannot have been easy to resist the temptation to focus on the island's more obvious attractions, he did not take the easy way out, deciding to follow a more arduous path in his attempts to capture the hidden qualities that elude the casual visitor. A possible definition of the true photographer might be: not whoever faithfully documents places and events, but he whose lens succeeds in capturing what is beyond our concrete universe. A daring affirmation, but one that is basically true. Reality, in art, is an interpretation of that same reality: a game played between the artist himself and the observer, the reader or whoever listens to the artist's creation. And the Aeolian Islands, as captured by Mr. Cosulich, are fundamentally "his", however, they are entrusted to us to ponder over so that we may discover the unknown, the unseen, the uncomprehended.
