In acceptable condition/ no dust jacket. Maroon cloth covered boards with gold lettering on front and spine. Light nicking and fraying to cloth at corners and top and bottom of spine. Spine faded. light overall scuffing, aging and soiling to covers as well. Spine is cracked at copyright page and at a few other places near the rear of the text block, but all pages are still intact. Two Previous owners' names and dates in ink in top corer of title pages. Otherwise pages are lightly aged but unmarked. NOT Ex-Library. A solid reading copy of Hertwig's most important theoretical work. Hertwig critiques Charles Darwin's concept of natural selection as driven by random variation, arguing that organismal development is governed by inherent laws rather than chance, emphasizing the role of structured developmental processes in evolution. Oscar Hertwig (1849 - 1922) was a prominent embryologist and zoologist. He is renowned for his pioneering research in developmental biology, particularly his 1876 discovery that fertilization involves the fusion of sperm and egg nuclei, a finding he observed in sea urchins. This work highlighted the nucleus's role in inheritance and advanced the understanding of sexual reproduction. He served as a professor at the University of Jena and later at the University of Berlin, where he directed the Anatomisch-Biologische Institut.
