Each of the monographs which I have written on these six great churches consists principally of an historical and artistic appreciation of the building, an attempt to tell the story of its birth and evolution to its present form, to indicate the place it occupies in the realm of art, and the testimony it upholds to the power of the sacred faith which it is its mission to proclaim. To each essay I have appended some notes, as full as space permits, on the details most worth individual attention in each building. I would suggest to my readers that they settle down inside the building and try with the aid of the first part to realize something of the feeling and ethos of the place, noticing the main features alone without attempting to master any details. Then return a couple of hours later, and with the aid of the second part and the index pass from point to point. I can assure you that when you have finished, Our Lady of Coutances or St. Peter of Lisieux or whichever the church may be, will have revealed to you some of the lineaments of its personality and taught you something of its secret. You will have made a new and lifelong friend.
