Frontis-piece illustration by "F. T. M.". Charles H. Sheldon (1840-1898) was an American author and minister, best known for his works that combine Christian moral themes with fiction. Born in Wellsville, New York, he attended Brown University and Andover Theological Seminary, later becoming a Congregational minister. His novels, including The Twentieth Door, often focused on moral and spiritual transformation, encouraging readers to live by higher ethical standards. He used fiction to address social issues of his time, blending religious and social themes in a way that resonated with a broad audience.
