In very good condition. Illustrated tan paper covers have light bumping to edges and corners and light overall scuffing and aging. Binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. Includes fold-out map, portrait and one black and white illustration. NOT Ex-library. NO remainder marks. Richard Cunningham McCormick (1832 - 1901) was an American politician, businessman and journalist. He was well-educated and a world traveler. He served as a war correspondent during the Crimean War, and the Civil War, during which he won acclaim for his coverage of the Battle of Bull Run. He was also an author of books, magazine articles, and served as an editor of the New York Evening Post and the Young Men's Magazine. He was appointed Secretary of State of the new Arizona Territory by President Lincoln and arrived at Fort Whipple, Chino Valley, in January 1864. He brought with him a printing press and established the first newspaper in the Arizona Territory, the Arizona Miner. He also brought his book collection which became the first territorial library. Keenly aware that Arizona could prosper only with a rapid increase in population, McCormick wrote a long letter to the editor of the New York Tribune in which he gave an account of the Territory's resources and possibilities. It was afterward printed in pamphlet form with a map of the Territory (reproduced in this booklet).
