Written in 1930, the play delves into themes of economic and social interest, reflecting Gide's engagement with socialist ideas during that period. The illustrator, Maurice Brianchon (1899-1979), was a renowned French painter and illustrator, part of the group of artists known as the "Peintres de la Réalité Poétique" (Painters of Poetic Reality).
