[From Conclusion] The Sand Hills of southern California's San Bernardino Valley present a fine example of relict Quaternary, continental interior-type dunes in a coastal-intermediate geographical context. Unfortunately, they are suffering greatly at the hand of man. The region is currently experiencing a rapid renewal of urbanization in conjunction with population spillover from Los Angeles and Orange Counties, and lower taxes and land values. Construction accompanying urban sprawl and an increase in off-road vehicle use may lead to complete destruction of the Sand Hills before the end of the present century. In the meantime, improper land use will result in increasing soil erosion, sand blasting, and unwanted sand and dust accumulation in adjacent areas, as well as an increase in the content of particulate matter in the lower atmosphere in an area already plagued with other air pollution problems. . .
